Volume 1. With Pain and Love for Contemporary Man

Elder Paisios of Mount Athos (1924–1994) was a Greek Athonite monk known throughout the Orthodox world, a true saint of our time, and a most authoritative spiritual guide and writer. The series of Elder Paisios's «Words» began to be compiled after his repose by the nuns of the Monastery of Souroti near Thessaloniki, which the Elder had founded. In compiling the «Words» of Elder Paisios, use was made of tape recordings and stenographic transcripts of conversations with him, his letters, and excerpts from books he wrote during his lifetime. Written in a lively, vivid question-and-answer form, the «Words» of Elder Paisios the Athonite have been translated into dozens of languages, helping many people find their way to God and receive answers to the questions that trouble them. Volume I of the «Words» gathers the Elder's teachings on sin and the devil, on modern culture, on the Spirit of God and the spirit of this world, and on the Church in our age.
