Lives of the Saints

The “Chetyi-Minei” (Menaion Reader) of St. Demetrius of Rostov is a vast collection of the lives of the saints, compiled for daily reading throughout the entire church year. The material is arranged by month and day of commemoration and includes the lives of apostles, martyrs, hierarchs, venerable monastics, and other saints of God, as well as accounts of the most important church events and feasts. In composing this work, St. Demetrius drew upon numerous Greek, Latin, Church Slavonic, and Russian sources, comparing and reworking them into a unified narrative. The “Chetyi-Minei” unites historical narrative with spiritual instruction, showing through the examples of the saints the paths of Christian faith, ascetic struggle, and striving toward holiness. This labor of many years became one of the most significant monuments of Russian spiritual literature and for centuries served as one of the principal sources of hagiographic reading in the Orthodox world.
